(It is important to note we are discussing adults and not children at this juncture.)Īuthentic meltdown in ASD adults have some or all of these characteristics – spontaneous occurrence, sometimes a slow work-up (called “rumbling,” plus a lack of insight into recognizing), reactive to sensory or social trigger, significant loss of body or behavioral control, may include stimming or bolting behaviors, happens with or without an audience, lack of rational thought, may have high occurrence of language that is uniquely characteristic of ASD (echolalia – repeating phrases, sounds, etc). (Again, there is no blame for exhausted caregivers in this scenario, it’s merely an explanation of what shapes the trajectory of social-emotional learning for ASD over time.) Unfortunately, this lends to an ASD individual “learning” that if they persist in relentless meltdown mode – eventually the person withholding what they want will given in to their demands. It is understandable that many situations may arise in which a parent or caregiver cannot “wait out” a meltdown. What is originally a toddler having age-appropriate tantrums becomes a furious teenager who is screaming, throwing things, threatening bodily harm to self and others when a boundary is set. (Usually, punitive measures drastically increase the ASD child’s inconsolability and can then add trauma.) The volume, intensity, duration and frequency of ASD meltdowns may continuously increase as the child’s world gets bigger, more confusing and incontrollable. ![]() ![]() The autistic toddler or child is often so immersed in distress that comfort is continuously resisted, and the only non-punitive measure a caregiver can take is to hold space until the child has fully released their meltdown. Distracting or diffusing an ASD child can be very challenging and sometimes impossible. Both can be antecedents to meltdowns, along with sensory overload, social confusion, emotional overwhelm, etc. Hearing the word “no” is often very aversive to a child with autism, and many also struggle with pathological demand avoidance. Moms of autistic children struggle with feelings of powerlessness as they come to realize that the neurodiverse child is uniquely single-minded when distraught. The longevity of ASD meltdowns often cannot be rivaled, whether in children or adults. How does an autistic individual learn that meltdowns are a means in which to meet their needs or preferences? (Neither fact lessens the impact nor damage of using maladaptive behaviors to gain control of results.) Generally speaking, manipulative meltdowns (and shutdowns) are borne out of desperation for the ASD partner to gain what they desire, or to act out against what they perceive as a wrongdoing ‘against’ them. While perhaps the majority of autistic meltdowns are sincerely the result of sensory and social-emotional overwhelm, it’s an unfortunate reality that sometimes ASD individuals use their frequent emotional dysregulation as a smokescreen in which to control or manipulate those around them. Over the course of life, some ASD individuals might come to realize that emotional dysregulation can be used as a means in which to manipulate a desired outcome. ![]() ![]() ![]() However, if you want to use the paste as a pastry filling, you should make the paste sweeter by following the recipe below, so the finished bread or cake will taste just right. Although some ranges and airports have set up local observation networks of varying sizes, with instruments such as surface mesonets, weather towers, boundary-wind profilers, RASS, SODAR and additional radiosonde releases, the observations available are still too sparse to describe the complicated local circulations and thermodynamic structures of the atmosphere. However, such fine-scale information is needed to support accurate nowcasting and short-term (0 - 12h) weather prediction in areas with complex terrain and other underlying heterogeneities. To address the problem, NCAR/RAP, in collaboration with the US Army ATEC (Army Test and Evaluation Command), has been developing a real-time four-dimensional data assimilation and forecast system (RTFDDA) since late 1999. The RTFDDA is a multi-scale and rapidly cycling regional weather analysis and forecast system that combines the advantages of a full-physics mesoscale model and all available observations. The PSU/NCAR MM5 Version 3 and a continuous Newtonian relaxation approach, termed "observation-nudging", are employed. With the "observation- nudging" method, observations are ingested into the model during the model integration, at the observed time and location. This allows for a full use of conventional and non-conventional observations, such as the range measurements that are taken at irregular asynoptic times. ![]() In data-void regions, the model generates analyses in response to the model physics and fine-scale external forcing, whereas the model is adjusted toward observations where data exists. Each observation is incorporated with proper temporal and spatial weighting functions and the model spreads the observation information to other regions according to the model dynamics. When the system is set up for a specific region, it runs continuously to produce four-dimensional dynamically and physically consistent analyses, which effectively removes the dynamic and diabatic "spin-up" problem. In many cases, short-term forecasts are also produced, initialized from these analyses at a selected cycling interval of 1 - 12 hours based on application needs and availability of computer capacity.Īs of May 1, 2004, fourteen RTFDDA systems have been built to support a variety of DoD missions within and outside the United States for durations from a few days to a few years. The system has also been used/tested for real-time fire weather, urban dispersion and airport operations.Īmong these systems, five are now operating at five Army test ranges and another one is running to support a Pentagon safety project. Since the release of the first operation system at the Dugway Proving Ground in 2000, a lot of work has been continuously carried out to improve the system performance and usability. For example, the nudging weight functions are refined according to weather structures and terrain features. ![]() New types of observations are collected and incorporated. A unique data quality control procedure has also been developed. And the model land-surface and PBL physics schemes were modified to more accurately simulate the PBL processes and urban effects. Recently, in cope with the need to quickly deploy the system globally, a convenient but effective Graphic User Interface (GUI) was build for users to start the system at any global location with only a few button-clicks, and view the model output in just a few minutes with graphic media such as a computer terminal or a PDA handhandle. ![]() This system is known as the NCAR/ATEC Global Meteorology on Demand (GMOD) system. Finally, in recognition of mesoscale predictability limits, fine-scale ensemble analyses and forecasts may be produced with the GMOD system. ![]() Ensemble members are produced by perturbing observations, the model physics and boundary conditions. ![]() |
